Your First NDIS Plan: What to Expect and How to Prepare

29 September, 2025

Starting your NDIS journey is an exciting step, but it can also feel overwhelming if you’re not sure what to expect.

At Charter Care Services, we understand that your first plan sets the foundation for your future supports. That’s why we’ve created this guide to help you feel confident and prepared as you take this important step.

Your NDIS plan is essentially a personalised roadmap. It outlines your goals, the supports you’ll receive and the funding allocated to help you achieve the life you want. Some goals might be big like finding meaningful work or moving into your own home. While others might focus on smaller, everyday needs such as developing new skills or accessing the community more independently. No matter the size, your goals matter, and your plan is designed to support you in reaching them.

The first step in the process is a meeting with an NDIS planner. During the meeting, you’ll be asked questions about your daily life, what you find challenging and the kind of assistance you need. Most importantly, the conversation will focus on your aspirations. This is your chance to share what’s important to you, so it’s helpful to reflect beforehand on what supports you currently have, what works well, and what could be improved.

Preparation plays a big role in making sure your plan reflects your real needs. Before your meeting, try writing down your goals, both short and long term and think about the supports that will help you get there. Keep any relevant documents handy like medical reports, therapy notes to strengthen your case. And remember, this is not the time to downplay your needs. The more open and honest you are, the better your plan will reflect your circumstances.

Once your plan has been approved, you’ll receive a copy that sets out your funding and how it has been allocated across different categories. It can feel like a lot of information at first, but you don’t have to figure it out on your own. This is where our team at Charter Care Services can step in to guide you through the details, explain what each part of your plan means, and help you put your funding into action.

Your first plan is just the beginning of your NDIS journey and it’s perfectly normal to feel unsure about how to navigate it. At Charter Care Services, our role is to make the process as smooth as possible. Whether it’s managing your plan, connecting you with the right providers, or simply answering your questions, we are here to support you every step of the way. With the right guidance and preparation, your first NDIS plan can be a strong foundation for achieving your goals and living life on your terms.
